What is the National Curriculum?
The Education Reform Act 1988 defined the National Curriculum for all children. Reviews since then now mean that the principle subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, Information Communication Technology and Religious Education. Other subjects to be taught are History, Geography, Design and Technology, Music, Art and Design and Physical Education. The scope of these subject areas is flexible and can develop to meet changing needs.

The Broader Curriculum
The National Curriculum framework encompasses the best of primary practice in Key Stages 1 and 2 but it states that it is not a straightjacket for learning. This is good news as much learning takes place at home, at play and as a result of ‘using the moment’ – local occasions, festivals, competitions, school events, class events……the list is long and varied. As well as gaining knowledge, skills and understanding, we all want our children to be well mannered, confident, caring, sensible and self-reliant. Our broader curriculum seeks to highlight and deepen these personal skills.
